LHC

Dear friends,

The technical shutdown of the LHC allowed much consolidation of the accelerator and of CMS. The activity surrounding both is now virtually complete and in this edition of the CMS Times Martin Gastal takes us through the final CMS-related efforts taken to ensure our detector is ready for real physics data taking.

T2 Hepgrid Brazil

A Grid is a service for sharing computer power and data storage capacity over the internet. A grid network is a kind of computer network consisting of a number of (computer) systems connected in a grid topology. The project is related to High Energy Physics and it's a part of the development program of a Brazilian Technician-Scientific Group, who currently collaborates with experiments Dzero/Tevatron/Fermilab and CMS/LHC/CERN.

Because of the advance of the research in the Elementary Particles area and the development of associated technologies it will be possible to produce about 20 Petabytes per year of events that are born in the collision between two protons with an energy of 14 TeV. This amount of data is too big to be easily managed by only one institution. Thus, it is obligatory to distribute and share this amount of data between the collaborators. For this, it was created the Grid of High Energies Physics, in which are shared the CPUs installed in each unit, the capacity of installed memory, hard disks, and all of this are connected from links of Gigabit technology.

T2 Hepgrid Brazil is an element that compose the Grid of High Energy Physics and will provide computing access for jobs coming from OSG and LCG. The main purpose of our T2 is to participate of the CMS-GRID in high priority and serve as computing infrastructure of several projects in Brazil.
